Your first major writing task of the semester is a reader-response type of composition. The focus of this essay will be one of the short stories studied in the second short story unit. These stories are listed in Assmt. #5 in Blackboard under Assignments.
TOPICS
You will select one of the stories to focus on, and then select an excerpt from the chosen short story to be the focus of your paper.

For example, from “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the following may be found: “The officers were satisfied. My manner had convinced them. I was singularly at ease. … But, ere long, I felt myself getting pale and wished them gone.”

This line serves as an example only. Do not use it as the focus for your paper.

After you have selected an excerpt from the story, you are then to think about what your selected text contributes to the story as a whole and then plan a paper according to the instructions that follow.
PAPER ORGANIZATION
Your paper will be organized in the following manner:

Introduction of quote
This part of the paper will provide the focus of your reader-response paper. You must include one sentence that presents your short story’s author and title, the selected text and its page number.
Reader-Response Section One
Importance to the element of ___:
You will discuss what the selected text contributes to one element of a short story—plot, character, setting, point of view, style or theme—as you determine. This will be in two parts as shown in the model paper.

You will discuss the selected text’s relevance to the reader. In other words, you will discuss what the selection means to you as the reader, why you as the reader chose it, etc. You will use third-person point of view here.

You will provide the correct MLA format for the selected short story.

CONTEXTUAL CONCERNS
**You may assume that your audience is familiar with the story.

**Do not provide a summary of the story. This is a reader-response type of analysis.

**Use third-person point of view in the paper, even in the reader importance section.

**Use present tense with this analysis.

**Use the MLA format handouts given in Blackboard.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
***You will receive three grades for this task—one grade for format (MLA and paper), one grade for content, and one grade for grammar.

When I read your reader-response compositions, I will ask myself these questions:

1. Does the paper have a clearly identified story and piece of text that serves as the focus of this reader-response paper? There must be a thesis sentence that will include the selected text from the short story and its page number, as well as the author/title of the short story.

2. Are there two elements of a short story used in the reader-response paper?

3. Is there a discussion on the relevance for the reader of the text from the short story?
4. Is there MLA documentation provided?
5. Do the contents of the paper follow the provided format given in the assignment sheet/paper model?

6. Are there any grammatical (fragments, run-ons, parallelism, etc.), punctuation, or spelling problems that interfere with reading and reflect poorly on the writer?
