Aristotle response Essay Dissertation Help
Aristotle makes two very striking (and very similar) claims about the pursuit of virtue/happiness. The first claim is that true friendship will never prevent one from attaining
virtue. The second claim is that what is beneficial to the individual is always beneficial to the society (and vice versa). So an individual’s pursuit of happiness should never conflict with the
overall aim (telos) of the society. PICK ONE of these claims and think of a possible counter- example. Could friendship ever conflict with virtue? OR, alternately, could the individual’s pursuit of
happiness ever conflict with the happiness of society overall? Think of at least one concrete example to serve as an objection and explain how Aristotle might respond to it. Do you think that this
response is adequate? That is, do you think that Aristotle’s claim is true? As always, be sure to support your own claims!
